Little Egypt Math Week!

Math Field Day | March 19, 2019
Each Spring, the Mathematics Department sponsors a mathematics contest, called Math Field Day, for regional high school students. Schools from the southern part of Illinois, ranging from Edwardsville to Massac County, as well as a few schools from Missouri and Kentucky participate.

The first annual SIU MFD Workshops will be from 12-2 p.m. for any student or teacher attending Math Field Day.  Exciting opportunities are offered as they particpate in hands-on workshops with Professors and Graduate Students in Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine, STEM, Geology, Psychology, Plant Biology and others. From the Egg Drop Challenge to Reimaging the Paper Crane Game to The Eagle Has Landed (Workshop Titles), students will be amazed while gaining knowledge in their fields of interest.

Math Video Challenge

The contest continues with the Video Challenge Problem. It will be uploaded Wednesday (3/21/19) by 4 pm.  To show that you have solved this problem, you must prepare a video showing all the work and a complete verbal description of your reasoning. Upload the video to Youtube, and then post a link to the video on the SIU Math department Facebook page (, so it will be time-stamped.

The deadline is Friday, 3/22/19 at 4pm. The first math team with a correct video solution will receive $300.  Congratulations to Carbondale Community High School our 2018 Math Video Challenge Winners!
